The Cascade Quartet presents Big Beethoven!
From the foundation of one musical genius to another, spanning the musical styles of almost three centuries, the Cascade Quartet dives into the ultimate repertoire for string quartet, in their upcoming concert titled “Big Beethoven.”. Performances are a part of the Great Falls Symphony’s Chamber Series: Sunday November 13, 2PM at the UCC Church, 2900 9th Avenue South, or Tuesday November 15, 7PM at CM Russel Museum. The program will open with Bach’s Art of the Fugue. A work written in 1740’s demonstrating the incredible mastery of Bach’s craftsmanship in counterpoint.
The quartet will perform sections of the work surrounding the audience from all corners of the room to bring out the awareness of the individual parts and allow the audience to experience the music from “inside the Quartet." This mature baroque master work will be combined with John Cage’s “Harmonies” which gives a twentieth century spin on 18th century hymn tunes in an almost medieval sparseness of style. The performance surrounding the audience will set the stage for an intimate look into the color of the string quartet before diving into Beethoven’s op 127.
This is the first of what is considered Beethoven’s Late Quartet’s written with a certain acceptance of his deafness, and a profound reflection on life, death and spirituality for the composer. Quartet violinist, Mary Papoulis, called the concert “a great opportunity to experience the magic of the string quartet through an historical framework from both before and after the great work of Beethoven.”
The Cascade Quartet performs “Big Beethoven” at 2pm on Sunday, November 13, at the 1st Congregational United Church of Christ, and at 7pm on Tuesday, November 15 at the C.M. Russell Museum. Receptions featuring French-inspired foods follows both performances. Admission is $15 Adults / $5 Students. Season passes are available for purchase for $75 Adults / $25 Students.
